But mostly it is a story about family, connected through generations by a special loaf of sourdough bread known worldwide as pain Poilâne. Apollonia Poilâne, the third-generation owner of Paris’ most-famous bakery, will share her remarkable family story with a global online audience as a keynote speaker during RootsTech Connect 2022, the world’s largest family history conference, March 3–5, 2022. I love the bond it creates when people share it,” says Apollonia, who was literally raised in the bakery started by her grandfather Pierre Poilâne in 1932. She worked in the family business as a child and began a formal 9-month apprenticeship to learn the art of bread making in her late teens. Then tragedy struck. Her father, Lionel Poilâne, whose innovative spirit and relentless commitment to quality made the Poilâne brand world-renowned, and her mother, Irena Poilâne, an American architect and art gallery owner, were both killed in a helicopter crash.

Orphaned with her younger sister, Athena, at the tender age of 18, Apolonia was faced with a decision. Gifted with a winning combination of her father’s vision and determination, and her mother’s artistic flair, she chose to carry on her family’s legacy. But she did not abandon her dream of a college education and for several years ran the business remotely while she earned an economics degree from Harvard University.

Today she is leading what can only be described as a baking empire, producing tens of thousands of the signature loaf each month, along with a variety of other culinary treats. Building on her family legacy, Apollonia has added many new mouth-watering items to the company’s offerings, written or contributed more than a dozen books, and produced online baking classes. Customers hail from down the street, and across the world, yet quality is still the chief ingredient of every hand-crafted loaf of bread, cookie, and pastry.
<p style="background-repeat: no-repeat; The Asuman family, who later changed their name to Nelson, were among the leaders of the group.

You can register now for free at RootsTech.org.

Shannon Combs-Bennetthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10086333811097762754noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3900471683421755580.post-79410760977975729812022-02-01T12:35:00.003-05:002022-02-01T12:35:29.227-05:00Digging Out and Looking Forward in 2022 - 10 years of blogging

Recently I spoke for the first time since February 2020 to a live audience. It was surreal to walk into a library with my mask on and instruct a group of people all masked and socially distanced. But, that is our new normal in the age of COVID. Online is wonderful, but it can be very isolating.

Other things have changed as well, and believe it or not, I am still adjusting even after two years. This is one reason I have come back to my blog. The deep depression I have been in from losing loved ones, friends, and colleagues to this disease cut me to the core. It was hard to communicate let alone go on as normal.

Throw in starting my Ph.D., one child in college, my husband going back to school, helping my other child with high school, and caring for my father I have been living on caffeine and a prayer. I know many of you can relate! How do I do it, is a question I am asked often. However, when you do not know any difference you make it happen.

So, it was no surprise to me that as the 10th anniversary of my blog loomed last December I had nothing to say. I do have ten drafts of blog posts sitting on my computer, but pushing the publish button was difficult. This leads me to today.

I need to read, write, teach, and publish more. That starts here. Plus, I'd love to hear from you. Anything you'd like to know more about from a lecture I have presented? Curious about a story I've posted here? Let me know. Send me a message through my contact form.

Let's make the next 10 years amazing.

Shannon Combs-Bennetthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10086333811097762754noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3900471683421755580.post-67551051968417342352021-10-01T02:00:00.066-04:002021-10-01T14:02:33.060-04:00I need your help

For those of you who do not know I am one year into a six-year doctoral degree in History and Genealogical Studies. My research involves multiple aspects of lineage organizations.

Examples of lineage/heritage organizations are:

Sons / Daughters of the American Revolution

Colonial Dames of America

General Society of Mayflower Descendents

and etc (there are nearly 500 organizations in the US!)

If you navigate to my page titled Ph.D. Research Questionaire you can read more about the project and find the link to the online survey.

I believe that perspectives from a wide audience would add important context and information to our study and would be a valuable resource for the present research and for any future researchers seeking to study the influence and historical significance of heritage organizations and lineage societies within the United States.

Participants must be over the age of 18 and are assigned a number by the survey program. They will be referred to by that number in the research. At the end of the survey participants will have the opportunity to give contact information if they would like to participate in the interview section of the study. This is optional, and not required to complete the survey.

For analysis purposes, the survey is broken into several sections. Everyone will take the sections covering general demographics, education, involvement in genealogy, impressions of applications for these organizations, uses of DNA with genealogy, and discrimination. After these sections, the participant will select from a group of descriptions that they feel best describes them.

These groups are:

Historian, archivist, librarian, professional genealogist, or employed with a company that does genealogical work and interacts frequently with persons who perform genealogical research

Member of a lineage or heritage organization

Not a member of a lineage or heritage organization

A paid staff member or volunteer for a heritage organization or lineage society who approves applications for membership or assists prospective members with their applications

A genealogist/family history researcher (but not a professional) who researches for themselves, family, friends, or others for free

Each of the groups will have a set of questions pertaining to them to gather information on their impressions of heritage organizations and lineage societies. Participants can choose as many groups as possible that describe them.

Thank you for reading this far! I hope you will consider taking part and letting me know your thoughts on this type of research and these organizations.
Shannon Combs-Bennetthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10086333811097762754noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3900471683421755580.post-87941385821835789382021-02-23T12:24:00.000-05:002021-02-23T12:24:09.925-05:00Yes, I am still alive and here are the updates
You know, I should stop making promises that I cannot keep. I have been writing, but it is for school and not here. Sigh, I really do miss you all and I have so many ideas that I would love to blog more about. Finding the time seems to be the real problem. Especially when I do have any downtime (per se) I want to relax like the snowman in this picture. Hot chocolate (with a kick), take me away!

So let me do a few updates.

Many of you know that my father lives with me. Officially, I am his primary care-giver. Family always comes first in my life, and he has had some health struggles over the past year. This cuts into a lot of my free time (I have kids at home too) for fun things like blogging. If you have ever been in this situation you know what I mean. But, we take it one day at a time and I do the best I can.

I am back in school. Working on my Ph.D. while in a pandemic has a few interesting problems. First, everything must be researched online. Thankfully archives and libraries are very understanding. More than one has sent me the material digitally I needed seeing I cannot get into repositories right now. I am also supposed to travel to Strathclyde every so often, but when the country will not let anyone fly in that is not going to happen.

The worst part of 2020 was so many of my in-person lectures canceling. Understandable, but I wished many of them would have moved to virtual learning quicker. However, once again the pandemic has forced groups and people into technology that they were dragging their heels on. Nothing like money to make you move faster! Thankfully 2021 is picking up so I will "see" you all online more.

In case you did not know, this week is RootsTech Connect virtual conference. I am presenting five lectures, and there are hundreds of videos to choose from. Registration for the event gives you access to all of the videos for one year!!

Oh, and an apology. It seems I am a dunce and had over 500 comments that were un-checked in my blogger account. While 80% were spam, there were some comments in there dating back 3 years! I have started to reply to them. However, if you all need me in a timely manner please feel free to email me through the website.

Alright, updates are done. Off to get some work done!
Shannon Combs-Bennetthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10086333811097762754noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3900471683421755580.post-33590930364439234112020-11-16T10:15:00.000-05:002020-11-16T10:15:06.207-05:00RootsTech Connect 2021 Announces First of Keynote Speakers

RootsTech Connect 2021 Keynotes

RootsTech Connect 2021—the world’s largest family celebration event—announced its first wave of keynote speakers hailing from Australia, Italy, Mexico, and the United States.
When we entered quarantine at the beginning of March I was like "Woohoo! So much time for writing!" Well, that obviously did not happen. Just look at how many posts there are here.

I got sick, my husband got sick, my kids got sick, and my dad got sick. While we do not know if we had Covid-19 (there were not enough tests at that time and we did not meet the criteria to be tested) it's been several months of being cared for and caring for others in my home. Exhaustion is the worse part. You just do not want to do anything.

To top it off, my husband and I have relapsed several times with whatever this is. On the 15th I was given a Covid-19 test which came back negative. However, as my doctor told me yesterday, that doesn't mean you didn't have it, you simply do not have it now. Yup, my husband and I are still sick with some sort of chest crud and are under treatment, again.

After 12 weeks at home (one of us leaves the house as needed for groceries, medicines, or to a doctor appointment) I need to set a routine and stick to it. No matter what. Having everyone here though has set my mind into a loop. When your kids are home, doing school work, it sometimes is hard to get into a work rhythm. I have not begun any large projects because once I get on a roll, then get sidetracked with helping someone, I often cannot maintain my momentum. The train of thought has derailed and the crane to right it gets bigger each time.

Although, I finished two crocheted afghan projects that have languished in a basket and made a new granny square blanket from scratch using odd and end yarn I have stashed around the house. So yay for making things!

Plus, we started a garden for the first time in 16 years. Yes, 16 years. My husband still has tilling

trauma from the last time I tried to do a garden. One of my boys wanted to try, and having a willing victim, er participant, makes things happen around here. We started seedlings in the house, built a raised garden bed (4'x4'), and have planted the first seedlings in it. There are three types of tomatoes, dwarf sunflowers, bib lettuce, and heirloom marigolds. The marigolds are from seeds I saved three years ago from a summer camp project for child number two. He attended camp at Mount Vernon, home of George Washinton, and they planted marigolds from the plantation to bring home. Those two heirloom flowers gave me several dozen seeds.

We have also planned an herb garden to go around the seating area in the back yard. The plants are ready to go, I am just waiting for the supplies from the building supply store to be delivered. We will have oregano, thyme, mint, lemon balm, sage, basil, and chamomile. Fingers crossed it all gets done this week. My seedlings want out of the house!

But it has not all been sitting around and playing with yarn and soil. I have made some progress on some paid, volunteer, and personal research. Limited of course because I only have the internet and my personal library. However, some of my librarian and archive friends are still at work. Guess what, they re bored too. I lucked out that some research I needed was done by these wonderful people over the last couple of months. So, reach out and see if the repository you need information from is taking online requests or phone requests. While it will not be free, you may get extra care and information since they have not as many customers to help.

I hope you all are doing well. Stay safe, take care, and do some genealogy today!Shannon Combs-Bennetthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10086333811097762754noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3900471683421755580.post-62400810497897972512020-03-02T17:00:00.000-05:002020-03-02T17:00:10.155-05:00RootsTech London 2020
Findmypast’s collections have grown by over 1.5 billion names in the last year
Totalling over 13 billion records, Findmypast is now home to the fastest growing archive on the
market

More records added over the past 12 months than all competitors combined

Millions of new and exclusive records bought online for the very first time
Findmypast continues to publish millions of new records from Britain, Ireland, North America
and beyond each and every month, providing users across the globe with new opportunities for
discovery.

The world leaders in British & Irish family history are now adding an average of 4.3 million
searchable names a day, making them the second largest publisher on the family history market
and the fastest growing archive online.
2019 has seen Findmypast’s collections expand significantly, with over 1.5 billion names added
to the site over the past 12 months alone.

By bringing more data to market than any other family history website, Findmypast is plugging
essential gaps in previously difficult to research regions through improved access to a wide
variety of family history resources, many of which cannot be found anywhere else online.

Recent progress in Scotland where a range of new material has been published in association
with society and archive partners across the country, marks just the latest step in Findmypast’s
continued efforts to help users knock down brick walls and discover ancestors on both sides of
the Atlantic.

All recent and future updates build on Findmypast’s existing digitization projects, including:

The Catholic Heritage Archive - a groundbreaking initiative to digitize the historic
records of the Catholic Church in the U.S., Britain, and Ireland that has resulted in the
online publication of more than 27 million records since February 2017. Recent additions
include millions of new Sacramental marriage records from the Archdiocese of New
York with more U.S. records yet to come.

The 1921 census of England and Wales - In the most anticipated family history
development since the online publication of the 1939 Register, Findmypast has been
selected as The National Archives’ commercial partner to make the 1921 Census of
England & Wales available online.

The British Newspaper Archive - Findmypast’s exclusive partnership with the British
Library that has already resulted in the online publication of more than 36 million pages.
New editions and titles are added every week with a variety of Commonwealth titles from
Canada, the Caribbean and beyond to be added in the coming months - also available on
Findmypast.

Tamsin Todd, CEO of Findmypast, said: “I am proud of Findmypast’s heritage of working with
wonderful organisations across the globe to digitise and share extraordinary record collections.
We hear from our customers all the time how learning about their ancestors’ lives changed their
understanding of their own lives. As we accelerate the growth of Findmypast’s collections, we
will help ever more people feel the thrill of going on a journey to discover family stories that
have the power to change the future.”
I was at RootsTech London in October 2020, and I loved it.
However, I have heard people in the expo hall stating, “how in the world would
they get there?” Well, let me give you some ideas that helped me get there,
which saved me time and money.

Airport to London: Fly into London City Airport. Do
everything you can do fly into here. It is across the street from the ExCel!
Plus, it was less than £5 to take a cab across the river to my hotel. Convenient,
quick, and you do not have to deal with London traffic or the Tube.

Airline: I love, love, love flying Aer
Lingus. Unfortunately, they do not go to every city in the US, but for a
discount overseas airlines, they are great. If they fly to your area, check
them out.

The Dublin Secret: There are 16 airports in the world where
you can clear US customs in that country. Dublin is one of these airports. What
does that mean for you? Well, you fly back to the US on a domestic flight and
do not have to clear customs when you land, which can be a nightmare. I love
flying for 5+ hours, walking off the plane, getting my bags, and heading home.
For me, it means cutting out the 3+ hours of standing in line here in the US after
a long flight.

Well, there are a few things you can think about for the time
being. Maybe one of these will help you make your London dream come true. I
will have more tips in the weeks ahead!

I arrived Monday night in Salt Lake City, and today is the first
time I have sat down to write anything about the conference. Yes, I have been
that busy! But it is a good busy, so let me catch you up on some of the fantastic
things that are going on here.

First off, I did make my trek to the Family History Library on Tuesday.
Of course, the floors were packed with many excited researchers. I lucked out
and found a couple of books I needed and have not found at any library in Virginia.
Even better, I used the book scanner there. So great! It does not put pressure on
the spine of the books, and you have a nice PDF of your pages downloaded to your
thumb drive. Much lighter (and environmentally friendly) than carrying papers
back home with me. Yes, I could have taken pictures with my phone, or used my
phone scanner, but it was a new tool to try out! Can you blame me?

It was my pleasure to attend the speaker's social and media dinner
on Tuesday night. These times are always special to me as I get to see people I
do not get to see very often in a more relaxed setting. We are here to work
(either speaking or reporting and sometimes both), and these events are the
kick-off for a high paced four days. I can never thank the event staff enough
for all they do for us as well.

My first presentation is done. I spoke yesterday (and will give
the lecture again on Saturday) on "What to do when the vital record is wrong?"
It was the first recorded lecture I have presented at RootsTech, so I was a bit
nervous. Thankfully my friends in the audience said I did great. I think I can
believe them, right?!

Last night when the expo hall doors opened to the public there was
an amazing phenomenon. Hundreds (and hundreds) of kids with their parents poured
into the Salt Palace. The expo hall is free for everyone and this kick-off of
the 10th anniversary grew quite the crowd. I am still waiting to see
if we get a count on how many were there!

vault that allows them to categorize, curate, protect and share different

Once in the FileShadow vault, an AI and machine learning process analyzes the
content to create metadata tags, including location (GPS), OCR of PDFs and
machine learning (ML)-generated tags for images. For example, FileShadow will
automatically identify terms in a document such as “marriage” and “certificate”
for a marriage certificate, even if those terms are not in the file name but
are in the document text, making it simple to search for and find Great Grandma
and Grandpa’s marriage certificate. Users can also apply custom tags such as
“marriage certificate” and “Great Grandma.” With automated and custom meta
tags, users can create collections quickly and easily without endless hours of
searching and viewing documents. <span lang="EN" style="background: #FEFEFE; font-family: "Calibri",sans-serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri;">

Timothy (Tim) Clarence Brennan was born to William Maurice
Brennan and Mary Frances Blines on 16 August 1895 in Washington, Daviess
County, Indiana. He was the youngest of four children, and his siblings were, William
Earl Brennan (1887 - 1946), Clara Brennan (1889 – 1890), and Johnnie Brennan
(1892 – 1901).

He grew up blocks away from the railroad depot where his father,
William worked many different jobs on the railroad and in the roundhouse at
Washington, Indiana. Taking in his father’s footsteps Tim left school after 7th
the grade and began an apprenticeship with the railroad. This resulted in Tim
becoming the youngest qualified tool and die maker on that line at the age of
16. As a tool and die maker Tim had a job for life with the railroad.

According to my father, his grandfather Tim could make anything.
If a part broke at home, he simply took the pieces to the workshop and created
a new one. He was a hard worker, creative, and loved to work with his hands.

On 24 July 1916 Tim married Agnes Miller (1897 – 1977) in
Washington, Indiana. Agnes was also from Washington and granddaughter of a
German immigrants. While she was the second generation, the family still spoke
German at home and associated with the German-speaking community located in
southern Indiana. Tim was also second-generation American, on his father’s side
as his paternal grandparents were from Galway, Ireland.

During their early marriage Tim and Agnes lived near the
railroad shops at 314 S. Meridian St. and 3 North St. Both easy walks from home
to work. Here they raised their four daughters: Ruth, Helen, Mary Alice, and
Margaret.

Religion was a touchy subject in the family. Tim was
Presbyterian and Agnes was Catholic. From what my grandmother told me, her
father was more laid back and did not fuss about much of anything. Mainly
giving in to what Agnes wanted according to religion and child-raising. Which
means their children were raised Catholic and not Presbyterian. However, only
two of the children stayed with the church as adults.

By 1930 they moved onto a small farm, which at that time was
outside of town. Now it is well within the limits of the city. Tim still worked
at the railyard and rode a horse into town until they purchased their first
car. They had a small herd of milk cows, a vegetable garden, and Anges loved
living there as she grew up farming. Tim grew up in town and was never quite as
handy with farming.

My father and his siblings spent many summers and weekends with
their cousins helping plow, harvest, pick bugs, milk cows, and canning vegetables.
He was also afraid of the cows and the bull they kept. According to dad, he
never quite figured out how to deal with animals and my father and his middle
brother usually did the driving of the herd for him.

Tim retired from the B&O Railroad in 1957 after having a
heart attack. He spent the next few years reading, working the small farm, and
enjoying life. As a retirement present, the man the workshop reupholstered his favorite
reclining chair in the fabric that the seats on the passenger trains were made
from. It was a vivid blue nubby fabric that I also remember very well. We had Tim’s
chair in our home until the late 1980s when it finally broke for good and could
not be repaired. It was my favorite cartoon watching spot as a kid.

My dad remembers the chair from childhood because Tim was an
avid reader. He would sit for hours in that chair reading books, magazines, and
the newspaper. Next to this chair was a basket with reading material and when
my dad would visit, he would sit next to him, pull something from the basket and
they would sit and read next to each other. Supposedly it irritated Agnes to no
end, wasting his life reading when he should be working. But he introduced my
dad to some of his favorite authors, like Zane Grey.

Tim died from a cerebral hemorrhage on 1 May 1962 after battling
years with coronary artery disease. He was in the hospital being treated for pneumonia
at the time. He is buried in St John’s cemetery next to the catholic church in
Washington.
